Good to know about emergency parachutes

The emergency parachute is an essential part of your equipment and can save your life in an emergency. Here are some important points and recommendations:

  1. Types of parachutes: There are round canopies, cross canopies and steerable reserves. Each has advantages and disadvantages, depending on your flying style and needs.
  2. Size and weight: Make sure that the parachute fits your take-off weight. A reserve that is too small can lead to a higher sink rate.
  3. Service life: Emergency parachutes have a limited service life, which is specified by the manufacturer (usually 10 years). Older rescuers should be checked or replaced regularly to ensure that they continue to function properly.
  4. Maintenance: Emergency parachutes must be regularly aired, repacked and checked for damage. Most manufacturers recommend a packing interval of 6 to 12 months.
  5. Assembly: Make sure that the emergency parachute is correctly integrated into your harness and that the deployment handle is easily accessible.
  6. Training: Practice throwing the emergency parachute in a safety training course to be prepared in an emergency.

Recommendation: Invest in a high-quality reserve that suits your weight and flying style, and have it checked regularly by a professional. Safety comes first!
